We all know we should be doing more of it, but often the question is how and with what? Do you want to spend more time playing with your child but are stuck for new and innovative games and activities? Well, you’re half way there. Recognising the importance of playing with your child even if you’re tired from work and not feeling up to it, is the first step to getting the most out of bonding with your children.
While it’s important for children to play alone or with other children, it’s just as important for them to play with their parents. According to research carried out byPsychology Today, it can be just as beneficial to us parents as it is for our children to engage in interactive play with them each and every day. The reason for this draws back to something you may remember hearing and/or reading a lot about during your pregnancy but is still very relevant to interacting and playing with our children as they get older. This is oxytocin. The research showed that oxytocin levels increase when mothers engage in affectionate play with their infant and when fathers engage in stimulatory play with their infants. Oxytocin is one of our feel-good hormones, a hormone that according to the research, not only creates positive energy in us, but in our children too as we release it and pass it on. So, rather than encouraging our children to play with their siblings or independently all of the time, we at Izzy and Harri believe we should all be making more time to play with our children with challenging, exciting and innovative activities that not only make our kids feel good, but us parents too!
If you’re looking for new ideas, we have a selection of card games that will give playtime in your household a whole new meaning and possibly the boost it needs!
Learning tricks and playing memory games with cards is a great form of stimulation for our children’s minds as well as ours. Playing with cards is an excellent way to teach patience and sportsmanship. It also encourages your children to play well in a team as well as giving them the confidence to play independently. It can support your child’s listening skills and provide them with letter recognition and reading which is of course very beneficial to all children’s development. If your baby is very small, showing them flash cards is a proven activity to stimulate their little minds.
There are many card games you can play as a family, but for a more investigative and educational approach, our Little Feminist playing cards could be the perfect activity for you to introduce to your little ones. Introducing them to important figures from our history can be exciting as a form of storytelling, while the two of you can together discover and learn about inspirational figures from our past.
