4 reasons why it is important to teach our kids about gender equality
Do you want your children to grow up in a society where their success will depend on whether they are a girl or boy? No, we don’t either.
Talking about gender equality and having age appropriate conversations at home with our kids is easier than you think. We can start teaching them all about gender equality from when they are as young as toddlers by simply introducing characters that go against the gender norm, and when the toys are back in the cupboard, act out stories ourselves and show that mummy can be a firefighter too!
In this blog we list four main reasons why it is important to start talking to our kids about gender quality at home to give them the best start possible and the confidence to go and grab life by the horns!
No fear to apply for their dream job
Female employment is currently higher than it’s ever been before. According to the government’s latest statistics released in December 2016, 70% of women aged 16-64 were in work; this is the highest female employment rate since comparable records began in 1971.
This is an amazing thing to share with our children and will give our daughters in particular the motivation and determination to apply for their dream jobs without any fear. At Izzy & Harri we believe girls can be scientists and engineers, while boys can be nannies and nurses without any judgement. We can introduce positive role models for our kids to look up to by pointing out those people in society that smash gender stereotypes.
The confidence to succeed
An article on Raising World Children notes that “being male is not a privilege. It is just as good as being any child, boy or girl. Every child will get everything in a balanced manner. No one owns the world just because of their gender.” Teaching our children that girls and boys are equal will give them the confidence they need to get the most out of life and the opportunities presented to them. We believe every child has the right to reach their full potential and shouldn’t be held back because of fear of not succeeding just because society says so.
Gender-targeted media & advertising
“Children are internalizing the messages they hear from their parents and teachers and what they see on television and in video games, movies and music…The best thing parents can do is really poke holes in all those things… Instead of hiding all the magazines with the ads that make you shake your head and think ‘that’s not what women look like,’ open those magazines, point out those ads and say, ‘can you believe this? Tell me what you think is wrong with this picture. What do women really look like?’”
We agree that the more we question and challenge things we see in the media in front of our kids, the more educated our children will be about the issues surrounding equality in our society. We want our boys to know that it is ok for them to cry and not feel bad for doing so; just because the media represents men as macho and masculine, we shouldn’t be shying away from highlighting what’s wrong with this.
Treating others the way they would want to be treated themselves
Talking about equality at home with our children and acknowledging that everyone should be treated equally should influence our children to be more mindful in how they treat others. If they learn to respect other children in the way that they want to be respected and accept the differences between them and another child, this will lead to a more positive social integration when mixing with other children.
